Painting Pottery and Making Memories

Residents at Trinity House Care Home recently enjoyed a relaxing and creative pottery painting session, spending a calm afternoon together painting and chatting.

Residents and staff ventured out to the edge of the city to visit the local business Potter Around, who enabled this unique and enjoyable art session. The quiet and calming atmosphere encouraged residents to focus on the task in front of them while practicing their fine motor skills, promoting mindfulness and staying present in the moment.

Residents were each able to choose their own ceramic item before deciding on colours, patterns and designs to personalise their creations. Practising these types of small decisions is brilliant for our cognitive health, while also enhancing residents’ autonomy and boosting self-worth.

Some residents chose to paint mugs that now make their morning cup of tea even more enjoyable, while others selected charming ceramic creatures including birds, elephants and seahorses, which brought smiles all around.

The session encouraged creativity and conversation throughout the afternoon, as residents shared ideas, discussed colour choices and imagined how their pieces would look once professionally fired. It also provided a valuable opportunity for meaningful communication, storytelling and self-expression while making new memories together.

Outings like these give residents the chance to enjoy a change of scenery among our close, like-minded community. The huge variety of things to do near our care home in Edinburgh make life at Trinity House vibrant and special.

Once the finished pottery pieces were returned, residents were delighted to see the results and took great pride in their completed creations. Many of the pieces are now displayed around the home and in residents’ private rooms, serving as lasting reminders of a wonderful day spent together.

This pottery painting workshop was just a small part of our varied activities programme here at Trinity House Care Home in Edinburgh, which includes other creative activities, games, gentle exercise and outings into our city. If you’d like to get involved and join the Trinity House community, book a tour of our home today to see the magic in-person.
