What is Dementia Care?

Dementia Care can be given in ones personal home or in a specialist setting such as a Care Home or Nursing Home. Where dementia care takes place is very much dependent on the level and severity of the condition, and this differs greatly from person to person. Dementia is the overall name given for the variety of conditions and types of dementia that people can have which affect their cognitive functions and abilities.

Being able to identify the signs and symptoms of dementia is the first step in knowing what type of dementia care is required for yourself or a loved one. In the early stages, signs may be in the form of forgetfulness, misplacing things, or just generally struggling to complete everyday tasks that would previously be done with no issue. As a progressive condition, symptoms may worsen to include experiencing difficulties in preparing meals, remembering appointments, and controlling bodily functions.

Such symptoms can signify that it is the right time to seek full-time, professional help, such as that from a care home. In facilities such as our care home in Edinburgh, care and support from nurses is offered in a safe place around-the-clock, so no matter what time of day or night it is, residents can feel confident that there will always be someone there for them. Dementia Care in a care home ranges from help with daily tasks and medication management to therapies and encouragement with social activities.

Within our home, we have a team of highly-qualified Nurses who have all received specialist dementia training and continue to do so to ensure we are always providing the most up-to-date equipment and methods of dementia care. Our team has the knowledge and experience to provide support to people with dementia and to identify when more advanced care may be required. Every resident has their very own fully-equipped en-suite bedroom, so they have access to everything they need whilst maintaining their independence and dignity. With our facilities, the team’s expertise, and 24-hour assistance, residents can rest assured that they are receiving the best care for them.

Every member of our care team is dedicated and passionate about providing only the highest standards of care. When it comes to our residents living with dementia, our team goes above and beyond to work collaboratively with them and their loved ones to ensure they are comfortable in their new surroundings and that they have everything that meets their specific needs. We understand that every person is different and will have their own interests and preferences, and we try and accommodate these in everything that we do. Whether it’s with our bespoke care plans or our dementia-friendly activity programmes, our residents receive support that is completely tailored to them.

We also know how important and challenging finding the right care can be, which is why with all of our care services, we offer prospective residents and their family members the opportunity to come in for a look around and an informal chat where we can provide advice and guidance in determining the right course of action for your circumstances. We strive to build on these relationships and encourage loved ones to be involved at all times. Whether it’s about events at the home, changes to medical plans, or even just to keep our residents connected with their friends and family, we ensure those special relationships are maintained.
