Enjoying a Month of Learning

A month of learning at Trinity House Care Home

January has been an exciting and enriching month for residents at Trinity House Care Home in Edinburgh, as they’ve embraced our 'Month of Learning' with open arms. We've all enjoyed getting out and about, exploring the city, and practising our new skills.

One of the standout moments of the month was a visit to the stunning St Giles’ Cathedral, a landmark steeped in history and culture. Residents enjoyed a guided tour of this iconic building, learning about its fascinating past – from its architectural brilliance to its more turbulent chapters. As one resident shared, "It felt amazing to be a tourist in my own city. I’ve lived in Edinburgh my entire life, but there was so much history I never knew about until now!"

The trip included exploring the cathedral’s intricate stained glass windows and viewing historical artefacts, which fascinated our residents. The visit was a perfect example of how we bring learning to life, offering our residents the chance to engage with their surroundings in meaningful and inspiring ways.

Learning doesn’t stop when we return home, either. From watching documentaries to picking up new skills like sign language, Trinity House offers countless opportunities for residents to continue expanding their horizons. We value still learning at any age and we particularly enjoy our intergenerational projects with nursery and primary school-aged children.

Continuing to learn in later life has many proven benefits. Studies from the Centre for Ageing Better highlight that keeping mentally active can improve cognitive function, memory, and emotional well-being. Lifelong learning also reduces feelings of isolation and provides a renewed sense of purpose, which is something we see in our residents every day.

At Trinity House, we believe that age is no barrier to discovery, and January has been a wonderful reminder of how important it is to be a lifelong learner whatever your age.
